Mr. Lang Swe is a banshee-type ghost known in Malay folklore as “langsuir.” However, he is the only male of his kind, as “langsuirs” are typically female. He resides in a village called “Kampung Temu Jodoh” and is in love with a pontianak. Their forbidden love stems from the societal taboo against langsuirs and pontianaks being together. One day, Queen Ponti, the highest-ranked ghost and the mother of Lang Swe’s beloved, announces her retirement. She desires a successor to frighten the villagers and people of Malaysia. To determine the new leader, a contest is organized: the ghost who scares the most humans wins. Lang Swe must emerge victorious to be with his beloved and earn the respect of all the ghosts.
